User Interface Re-Imagined

Before we explore the new integrations, let’s take a look at the new NNA interface. Coded from scratch by the Nagios development team, the updated UI provides a completely overhauled and optimized user experience and is available in both dark and light theme options.

New Dashboards and Reports

Nagios Network Analyzer now includes customizable per-user dashboards so that each user can quickly view the data that is most important to them. If you’re familiar with Nagios Log Server 2026 or with Nagios XI’s new Smart Dashboards, you’ll be right at home as you resize and arrange your custom panels to meet your needs.

And, once you’ve fine-tuned a dashboard, you can download it on-demand or schedule it for automatic email delivery as a PDF or JPG report.

New Home Page

The updated Home page provides an at-a-glance view of flow source traffic and data from integrated tools, including total Nmap scans over the last week, Suricata alerts, and Wireshark captures.

Nagios Network Analyzer 2026 includes robust integration with the powerful network security tools Suricata, Wireshark, and Nmap. Initial setup instructions are included right in the user interface; simply copy the listed commands, paste the batch into the terminal of your NNA server, and hit Enter to load them up. Once they’re installed, built-in user interfaces enable you to leverage the capabilities of the tools to do things like running live interface and network composition scans, inspecting packets, alerting on Suricata Signature IDs (SIDs), and much more.

• Managing Suricata Rulesets and individual Rules (26 open-source and commercial Rulesets pre-loaded).

Centralized User Management

Fusion has always provided a lot of value by enabling users to visualize status data from across their distributed Nagios deployments. It’s already a must-have for distributed environments and users who employ multiple Nagios Monitoring Solutions. Namely, Fusion’s ability to aggregate data from Nagios XI, Nagios Core, Nagios Log Server, and Nagios Network Analyzer systems and display it in custom dashboards and tactical displays. But one area of untapped potential has always been in serving as a platform for centralized management of other Nagios systems.

No longer is that the case! New in 2026R1 is the ability to copy users from one fused Nagios XI system to others with a few clicks, using the new Centralized Management menu. Although a humble first step, this new feature lays the foundation that will be used going forward to enable many more management capabilities in the future.

As an added bonus, this addition also necessitated adding a new update users’ endpoint (PUT/system/user) to the Nagios XI API, so both solutions were enhanced in the process.

System Profile

You’ll also notice a new System Profile menu, which can be used to generate and download a profile with a single click. The System Profile zip contains a wealth of data about your setup and serves as an invaluable resource for troubleshooting and support.

Fixes

Several issues were also resolved in this release to make Fusion more stable and reliable:

• Server polling interval is now being updated properly.
• The Administrator and User Guides are now being displayed correctly.
• The ssl_hostname_verify parameter is now being passed when adding a server via the API.
• Users located in AD groups will now show up in the “Add User from AD/LDAP” page.

New Monitoring Wizards

Three great new wizards join the ranks in XI 2024R2: Kubernetes, Zabbix Agent, and the Generic Plugin Wizard. We’ve also updated the NSClient++ Wizard.

Kubernetes with NCPA

This Premium wizard enables you to monitor Kubernetes clusters via the NCPA agent. Available metrics include Nodes Active, Daemon Sets, Deployments, Jobs Failed, Pod Restarts, Replica Sets, Stateful Sets, TLS, PVC, and Unbound PVS. You can learn more about the initial setup here:

Generic Plugin Wizard

The new Generic Plugin Wizard provides a quick way to set up monitoring using custom plugins. This enables you to create a command to execute your custom plugins, and setup a Nagios check for it without the need to go to the Core Config Manager.

Also worth mentioning is that we added support for check_nrpe to the NSClient++ Wizard and updated its status from Legacy, making it once again a current wizard.

SSO

A big request we’ve seen over time from our users is an SSO option, and we’re excited to introduce Single Sign-on via Microsoft Azure Active Directory in 2024R2. You can access this feature in Admin > External Sign-On(SSO) menu and can learn more about setting it up here:

NagVis Enhancements:

Nagios Core Updated

The Nagios Core engine at the heart of Nagios XI has been updated to 4.5.9.

NCPA v3 Support for Deploy Agent

The Auto Deployment feature, which enables you to push NCPA (the Nagios Cross Platform Agent) to remote hosts right from the Nagios XI UI, previously only supported NCPA v2, an older version of the agent. Now you can also deploy NCPA v3, the latest version, with the tool. This enables you to take advantage of all of the updates that went into v3, while still leveraging the convenience and centralized control of Auto Deployment.

Introducing Premium

In Nagios XI 2024R2, we’re introducing a new Premium Features model. Premium Features are a benefit of active license Maintenance. To ensure continued access to these features, we suggest you renew your Nagios XI license annually. Prerequisites

• You have Internet or Ethernet access
• Your host is running Linux or Windows

Installing the Windows Exporter from Prometheus Community GitHub onto a Windows Host

1. Download the latest version from GitHub

• Go to https://github.com/prometheus-community/windows_exporter
• Look for the latest release and download the amd64.msi file

2. Run the installer

• In the initial Custom Setup section, choose Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive under Firewall Exception. This will add an inbound permission for the Exporter listening port.

• Click all the options that say Next or Proceed in the installer
  • You do not need to change or add any other information to use the Prometheus Wizard in Nagios XI, you can simply keep the defaults.

• It will say it is installed
• (Optional): Confirm it is up and running by entering http://<HOST_IP>:9182/metrics

With all the above steps completed, your Windows system is now properly configured for Prometheus monitoring, and you’re ready to move on to integrating it with Nagios XI.

Installing and Running the Prometheus Node Exporter on a Linux Host

1. Download the latest version using command line

• Go to https://prometheus.io/docs/guides/node-exporter/
• Right click the Linux download link and select Copy Link to get exactly what you need to enter in the below wget command.
• On your Linux host, open the terminal
• Run the following command:
  

# wget https://github.com/prometheus/node_exporter/releases/download/v<VERSION>/node_exporter-<VERSION>.<OS>-<ARCH>.tar.gz

This will download the Node Exporter to your Linux host.

2. Run Node Explorer

• Run the following commands:
  • tar xvfz node_exporter-*.*-amd64.tar.gz
  • cd node_exporter-*.*-amd64
  • ./node_exporter

With these above steps completed, your Linux host is ready for Prometheus monitoring, and we are ready to move on to integrating with Nagios XI.

Conclusion

With this, we’ve set it up the data exporters and are ready to configure monitoring in Nagios XI, enabling us to gather all of the same data the same way that Prometheus does, giving us access to the detailed information it provides while showing the data in XI in a clear way.

For the last 10 years, Nagios Log Server has provided users with a powerful log collection, analysis, archiving, and alerting solution. We’re excited to announce the release of Log Server 2024R2, and in this article we’ll discuss the major frontend and backend updates and improvements you’ll discover in the new major release.

User Interface: The Next Generation

When you download the new Log Server 2024R2 release, the first thing you’ll notice is the beautiful new user interface, coded from scratch by the Nagios development team. Check out how easy it is to manage Dashboard panels now!

The new UI is crisp, clean, and fast. This change will provide greater flexibility and agility to our developers, enabling them to quickly incorporate new ideas, respond to customer feedback, and cultivate Log Server’s look and feel in the future. For example, creating the new Dark Theme and Light Theme:

One change that might take a moment to get used to is that the menu bar is now on the left, and icon-based, just like the Nagios XI Neptune theme you may already use. Aside from that, longtime Log Server users will still feel right at home, as we’ve kept the menu structure and location of key functions the same.

Another major enhancement comes in how panels are managed in your Dashboards.

Major Backend Updates

The improvements in Log Server 2024R2 go far beyond the stunning new UI, extending to the core components of the tool. First off, the datastore has been shifted from Elasticsearch to Opensearch 2.14.0. Secondly, Logstash has been updated to v8.13.4. These updates will provide you with improved security and functionality in your Log Server deployment.

The upgrade to Opensearch means that Log Server users will now benefit from the uniform field labeling and hierarchical tree structure of the Elastic Common Schema (ECS). For example, information such as the host name of different types of log sources will be uniformly placed into a common field, in this case host.hostname.

In previous versions of Log Server, this would have been Hostname for Windows sources, and hostname for Linux sources, causing no results to show in the case of simple capitalization mistakes when composing queries. Setting up queries and alerts to find the important log entries you’re after will be quicker and easier going forward, since the fields for common attributes will have the same name and capitalization regardless of the source type.

You’ll also notice that in R2, significantly more fields are parsed in your syslog data, including data such as process.name, service.type, log.syslog.severity.code, and log.syslog.severity.name, further enabling you to quickly narrow down datasets in your queries.

Migration Made Easy

Due to the upgrade from Elasticsearch to OpenSearch an inline upgrade from R1 to R2 isn’t possible, but we have created a GUI-based migration tool to help existing users migrate their data and to a new R2 deployment. The tool makes migrating the following to your new R2 deployment a snap:

• The log data contained in the Elasticsearch engine.
• User accounts
• Configuration
• Queries
• History
• Alerts
