Introduction
Upgrading to the latest version of Nagios XI unlocks a range of enhanced features and performance improvements—this guide provides clear instructions to help you through the upgrade process. By staying up-to-date, businesses can maximize the effectiveness of their monitoring systems, reduce vulnerabilities, and maintain optimal performance across their infrastructure.
Benefits of Upgrading
Upgrading Nagios XI is important because each new version includes essential security patches, performance improvements, and enhanced features that help ensure reliable and efficient monitoring. Upgrades often introduce new integration, improved user interfaces, and advanced customization options. All of which enable organizations to keep pace with evolving IT environments and business needs.
Prerequisites
Make sure you are running Nagios 2014 or later and that your server has an internet connection.
The first step is to make sure you have a valid system backup as well as a configuration backup of XI before continuing. There are a few different ways of doing this whether it’s from the command line, using the web interface, or manually created. Today, we will be using the web interface.
Creating a Backup
For the web interface version:
- Navigate to the Admin page.
- Click on System Backups.
- Click on Local Backup Archives.
- From there, click on Create Backup.

Nagios XI will automatically create a backup, and when it’s available, it will pop up on this page in the local backup archives with a .tar.gz file.
Checking for Updates
- On the left-hand side, click on Admin.
- Beneath the System Information tab, click on Check for Updates.

This is where you can check to see if your XI version is up to date.
- At the bottom of the page, it says available updates, where you can see your XI version.
- Above that, there is a text box that says Check For Updates Now. Click this button, and XI will check for any new updates.
Completing the Upgrade
If your instance isn’t updated, a text box will confirm the update.
- Click OK.
- Once the upgrade is completed, a green box will confirm that the update was successful, and a button will appear to complete the upgrade. Click Complete Upgrade to finish the process.
If you navigate back to the Check for Updates page, you will see that your XI instance is now updated to the most recent version.
Conclusion
By following these steps, you can ensure your Nagios XI system remains up to date with the latest security patches and performance improvements. Keeping XI updated not only enhances security but also ensures compatibility with the latest features and integrations. Regular upgrades will help maintain the efficiency and reliability of your monitoring system, allowing your business to proactively manage IT infrastructure and prevent potential issues before they arise. Staying current with Nagios XI ensures that your monitoring tools remain robust and effective in meeting your organization’s needs.
